Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries.  Without them humanity cannot survive. The Dalai Lama says that as human beings we are all the same. We all want happiness and do not want suffering. If our minds are at peace even physical pain will not disturb our calm. (If our minds are upset, physical comfort will not bring peace.) He advocates the cultivation of warm-heartedness and human values such as compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, contentment and self-discipline. He is concerned with encouraging people to be happy.

We are required to welcome strangers. The people running from the south to the north, many of them for months, are running from fear and danger sufficient to drive them from their homes, often with small children in tow.
